Vilna (Vilnius) is known for its baroque architecture as seen in the medieval Old Town. The buildings lining the partially cobblestoned streets reflect the diverse styles and eras. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania was a heterogeneous mix of people and cultures – Jewish and Christian. Politically, the country was controlled, over the centuries, by both Imperial and Soviet Russia, Germany, Poland and Lithuania which added to the cultural blending of today’s Lithuania.
